  • Central Tilba lies along the southeast coast of New South Wales. Today it’s a charming destination town, one that’s deeply rooted in Yuin Aboriginal history and intertwined with the settlement of Europeans, predominantly in the early 1800s.

Gulaga, also known as Mount Dromedary, sets the backdrop here. A walkable mountain now, this once active volcano represents a spiritually significant place for the Yuin people who consider it a symbol of motherhood and the tribe’s place of origin. As extensions of Gulaga’s beauty and cultural importance, the mountain is said to have two “sons” observable from her location: Baranguba (or Montague Island), and Najanuga (also known as Little Dromedary). You may recognize these names as the reference for the guest rooms at The Bryn residence.

In the mid 1800s, gold was discovered close to Gulaga, prompting a rush of settlers to the area and establishing it as a mining village. Over time, Central Tilba eventually transitioned to a dairy town and is now a posh haven for travelers. The main street is dotted with unique shoppes, galleries, and cafés that are exclusively locally owned and operated. It’s a quaint town filled with cottages and boutique accommodations, offering a retreat for anyone wanting an escape to a slower pace of life and to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the South Coast.

Central Tilba is classified by the National Trust as the Central Tilba Conservation Area and is one of Australia’s most popular heritage sites.
